Music History II: 1600 through Mozart

Music History II provides a thorough overview of Western music during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, i.e. covering a period from c. 1580s to the 1780s.  We will discuss the main forms, genres, styles, and works of the so-called Baroque, Pre-Classical and Classical periods. By exposing students to a vast repertoire, this course will develop analytical skills through listening, and score reading while also seeking to explore broader issues, notably by discussing the development and practices of musical forms and genres to specific aspects related to the societal physiognomy of this time.

Prerequisite: MUSIC 261 or consent of instructor. One course.
