Join the Duke Chorale and Chapel Choir for a sing-along concert in beautiful Duke Chapel. The work performed will be Franz Schubert's Mass in G. All are invited to sing; scores are provided. Free and open to the public.

Rare Music: Echoes of the Past: Sounds of the American Civil War

PENELOPE JENSEN, soprano; MICHAEL HIRATA, tenor; WAYNE LAIL/LEWIS MOORE, baritone; DON EAGLE, cornet & keyed bugle; RANDALL LOVE, square piano. Free Admission. Music from the Special Collections of the Duke University Libraries will be performed using original instruments from DUMIC's G. Norman & Ruth G. Eddy Collection. The concert is based on several themes contrasting views of the North and South as seen through the lyrics and music of the age. The Rare Music series is sponsored by DUMIC (Duke University Musical Instrument Collections) and Duke University Libraries.

Violin Masterclass with DMITRY SITKOVETSKY

Discussion/Performance with the BORROMEO STRING QUARTET

Discussion/performance of Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8. Free and open to the public. Considered "Simply the best there is" by the Boston Globe, the critically acclaimed Borromeo String Quartet is one of the most sought after string quartets in the world, performing over 100 concerts of classical and contemporary literature across three continents each season. Audiences and critics alike champion its revealing explorations of Schoenberg, Brahms, Ligeti, Kurtag, and Janacek, and affinity for making challenging contemporary repertoire approachable. Lauded for its absolute mastery of the complete Beethoven and Bartok quartet cycles, the ensemble is currently focused on the work of Dmitri Shostakovich.

Rare Music: Sentimental Journey with STEVE BARRELL, clavichord

The quirky Empfindsamerstil, most popular in mid- to late 18c Germany, is noted for its extreme and abrupt expression of sentiments, and is particularly suited for the Clavichord. The program will be played on a clavichord from 1785, and includes a variety of works by Reichardt, Muthel, and Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach, the chief proponent of this genre. Steve Barrell has been a feature performer, lecturer and performance coach for clavichord societies and early music festivals in Europe and the US. In 2002, Steve debuted the newly-restored JA Hass clavichord (Hamburg 1763) for the British Clavichord Society during its annual conclave at the Raymond Russell Keyboard Collection in Edinburgh. His collection of historic keyboard instruments, including the Lindholm clavichord heard in this concert, is considered among the best in the US. Free Admission. Guest Vocal Recital: DANA LONG ZENOBI, soprano and DAVID HEID, piano

Alumna Dana Zenobi (B.A. Music, 1999) studied with Susan Dunn when she was at Duke. A member of the voice faculty at Southwestern University, she has appeared with Austin Lyric Opera and Lyric Opera Cleveland, among others. The Cleveland Plain Dealer says, "Her coloratura dazzles, and her phrasing is irresistible and melting. Zenobi is a soprano to listen for." This recital features Arne's "The Soldier Tired of War's Alarms," Rossini, Le Regata Veneziana (The Venetian Regata), and songs by Rachmaninoff and Leslie Adams. FREE ADMISSION.
