THE MUSIC MINOR

At Duke, a large number of undergraduates have a serious interest in music as performers, listeners, and composers. To such students the Department of Music offers the advantages of fine undergraduate ensembles, compelling studio and classroom teachers, and a wide variety of courses about many different kinds of music. Because the major in music is relatively demanding, many musically inclined students have taken courses as non-majors, completing in some cases several of the courses required for the major as well as performing in recitals and ensemble concerts., but without finishing the major.

For such students the music minor is a good option. Briefly stated, the program aims to broaden, as well as deepen, students' understanding of the art of music, regardless of their principal interest in performance, composition, or literature. The music minor offers a good deal of flexibility, as outlined below. As with the music major, upon the student's declaration of the minor, the University will waive the applied music fees for the first instrument or voice up to the point that the requirement for the minor is met.

MUSIC MINOR REQUIREMENTS

A minor in music allows a student to gain a basic introduction in several areas of music and pursue more advanced work in one or more of those areas. It consists of six full course credits, of which at least three must be at the level of 100 or above. The usual applied lesson fee (currently $364 for one-hour lessons, $182 for half-hour lessons, and $91 for class lessons) is waived for music minors in the primary area of concentration up to the point that the requirement in the minor is met.

WAIVER OF MUSIC MINOR REQUIREMENTS

A request for waiver of any requirement for the music major or the music minor, together with supporting documentation where appropriate, should be submitted to the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS). After reviewing the request, the DUS may decide that the student needs to take a departmental examination in the area before a final decision can be made. Waived courses earn no credit towards the 34-course graduation requirement, nor will grades for them appear on your transcript.
