Sound, Music, and Death
An exploration of the roles sound and music play in people’s attempts to grapple with death and its many auras. How has death been imagined, anticipated, aestheticized, and rendered sensible (or not) in sound, music, and culturally situated ways of listening? How do ghosts of the past and future resound in the present? We consider these questions and many more through 1) a survey of relevant scholarship from music, sound studies, performance studies, and anthropology, and 2) a range of musical case studies from different parts of the world.
