Musical Modernisms

MUSIC259

Modernism in Music presents a rich and vast panorama of musical sounds and styles, from the parting shots of musical revolution heard in 1912-13 in Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring to contemporary multi-media opera: Steve Reich's The Cave, X (Malcolm X) by Anthony Davis, and Nixon in China by John Adams. Fundamental to an understanding of where music is today, the last century’s music has given voice to musical sounds never heard or imagined before.

Through a seminar approach involving listening, writing, and discussion, we will explore evolving traditions like jazz; innovative musical instruments; the interchange between popular and concert music; the apparent contradiction of experiment existing side by side with deeply traditional music; and the future of music and its many streams.

One course.
