Born in Harlem and raised on Manhattan's Upper West Side, Bobby Broom was still in his mid-teens when he was approached by Sonny Rollins to join his band for an upcoming tour. Broom decided to finish high school instead, but Rollins was undaunted, and Broom made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1977 with Rollins, Bob Cranshaw, Eddie Moore, Aurell Ray, pianist Mike Nock, and trumpeter Donald Byrd. In addition to performing with Rollins for many years, Broom has also performed with Al Haig, Art Blakey, Tom Browne, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, and Dr. John, among others. He has released a dozen recordings as leader and been featured on many more. Broom has taught at the University of Hartford, the American Conservatory of Music, Roosevelt University, and DePaul University. In recent years he's worked with a jazz mentoring program sponsored by the Ravinia Festival Organization, teaching music students in public high schools throughout Chicago. The Duke Jazz Ensemble is directed by John Brown.
