Gabriel Richard and Jesús Castro-Balbi: “Tribute to Ravel” Recital
Friday, November 7,
-
Join us for a concert celebrating the sesquicentennial of Maurice Ravel's birth! Violinist Gabriel Richard and cellist Jesús Castro-Balbi present an inventive program that traces his far-reaching influence on chamber music from the early 20th century to today. At its heart is Ravel's Sonata for Violin and Cello, a work of radical clarity and contrapuntal innovation, composed in memory of Claude Debussy.
Violinist Gabriel Richard and cellist Jesús Castro-Balbi pair Ravel's masterwork with music by Béla Bartók, Jean Martinon, Augusta Read Thomas, and Alice Hong, each reflecting a different facet of the evolving modernist and postmodern chamber idiom.
The program culminates in the world premiere of Five Duos by Gilbert Amy, composed expressly for the performers. A leading figure in postwar French music and former director of IRCAM, Amy is known for his synthesis of formal rigor and lyrical depth. His new work continues a tradition shaped by Ravel himself, offering a contemporary voice in a century-spanning dialogue.
Presented in collaboration with Villa Albertine, the Departments of Music and Romance Studies at Duke University, this program invites reflection on continuity and transformation within the musical imagination.
Free and open to the public. All are welcome.
