Overview

A former resident artist at the Banff Centre for the Arts and an artist for the N.C. Arts Council Visiting Artist Program, oboist Bo Newsome plays an active role in the music scene of North Carolina. He performs with the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, the Coastal Winds (East Carolina University's faculty Woodwind Quintet) and Mallarmé Chamber Players, and has received Emerging Artist Grants from the Durham Arts Council and the Durham Jaycees Award for Community Leadership in the Arts.

As a composer, Newsome has received the North Carolina Arts Council’s Composer Fellowship and written several scores for UNC Center for Public Television. His commissions include those from the National Symphony Orchestra, the N.C. Museum of Natural History and Mallarmé Chamber Players. Recent premieres include his "Narrative with Dance Simulations" for two oboes and cello at the International Double Reed Society conference in June, 2016 and "Short Story" for oboe, viola and cello by the Mallarmé Chamber Players.

Frequently heard in both chamber music and orchestral performance, Newsome is often praised for his lyrical playing. After a Mallarmé performance of Joan Tower’s “Island Prelude,” a reviewer at Classical Voice of North Carolina wrote, “Newsome’s gorgeous cadenza playing was meticulous and rich — if only birds could sing that well.”
