Overview
Emily Shyr entered the PhD program in Historical Musicology at Duke University in the fall of 2018. Prior to coming to Duke, she earned her MPhil in American History at the University of Cambridge (2018), and received her BA degree from Columbia University (2017), where she majored in music and history and received honors in music. As a Fulbright recipient, she spent the 2021-2022 academic year in Tübingen, Germany, conducting research for her dissertation, "The Romantic Sublime in the Late Works of Franz Schubert."
An active oboist, she is currently the oboe instructor at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she was also a visiting lecturer in music history in the fall of 2020. She has presented papers and lecture-recitals at international conferences in Ireland, Italy, and the U.S., and has given invited presentations and lecture-recitals at NYU and UNC Wilmington.
Previously, she was principal oboist of the Cambridge University Sinfonia and the Columbia University Orchestra, as well as a member of the New York Youth Symphony and Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, King's College Chapel, and toured with the New York Youth Symphony on their inaugural tour to Buenos Aires. She currently studies with Joseph Robinson, former principal oboist of the New York Philharmonic. Her industry experience includes internships at W.W. Norton & Company, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and the Atlanta History Center.
Her research interests include not only the music of Franz Schubert and early Romantic aesthetics, but also the intersection between the genres of instrumental music and lieder, the relationship between music and politics, the concept of late style, as well as intertextuality and historicism.
