Faculty News: January 2014

Thomas Brothers' new book, Louis Armstrong, Master of Modernism, will be released on February 3 from W.W. Norton & Company.  Kirkus trumpets Master of Modernism as “A masterful performance that displays the author’s vast archival research, musical knowledge, familiarity with cultural history and profound sensitivity to America’s vile racial history,” and a starred review in Booklist raves, “A bravura accomplishment..."


The John Brown Quintet's latest album, Quiet Time (Brown Boulevard), has a special Valentine's release date of Feb. 14, 2014. Reviewer Grady Harp writes, "`Acoustic bass player John Brown is a phenomenal jazz musician, composer, arranger, bandleader, educator, and one of the most articulate people you will ever encounter. He is creative and thinks outside the box.' So goes the praise from Joe Montague and many others who have followed the rather astounding career of John Brown." Harp goes on to say of Quiet Time, "We're in the presence of quiet greatness here. And nothing could be more beautiful or moving."


Bryan Gilliam, Frances Hill Fox Professor in Humanities, will be interviewed for "Music is a Holy Art: Celebrating Richard Strauss," a radio documentary being produced for WQXR, New York Public Radio in honor of Strauss' upcoming 150th anniversary.  

In November, Gilliam recorded a televised interview with Vladamir Jurowski, who conducted Strauss' opera Die Frau ohne Schatten at the Metropolitan Opera. The interview took place the day after his Saturday matinee performance (November 23, 2013). VIEW THE VIDEO BELOW.
