Violin Masterclass with James Ehnes

Chamber music masterclass with Attacca Quartet
On November 5, three groups of students in the Chamber Music Program participated in a virtual masterclass with Attacca Quartet. The students were socially-distanced in Baldwin Auditorium and interacted with the members of Attacca through Zoom.

Violin Masterclass with Arnaud Sussmann
On October 21, 2020, Duke violin students participated in a virtual masterclass with Arnaud Sussman, presented in association with Duke Performances. While Sussman joined in via Zoom, students presented socially-distanced performances in the Nelson Music Room. Although they were spread throughout the hall, the Nelson Music Room provides an intimacy that allowed all the students, participants and observers, to be engaged in the experience.
In these photos, Lauren Cao plays the third movement (Rondo: Allegro) from Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61. Allen Zhang also performed two movements from JS Bach's Partita #2 and Charlie Todd performed the first movement of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.
Arnaud Sussman participated in a virtual Chamber Arts concert for Duke Performances on Oct. 17, performing the Brahms Quartet for Piano and Strings in G Minor, op. 25, no. 1 with David Finckel (cello) and Wu Han (piano), directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and Paul Neubauer (viola). Chamber Music masterclass with Harlem Quartet
On November 15, Harlem Quartet conducted a master class for students in the Duke Chamber Music Program. Three groups performed for Harlem Quartet, receiving feedback and advice about their performance. Joel Krosnick Cello Masterclass 2019
Joel Krosnick (Cellist, Juilliard Quartet 1974-2016) conducted a cello masterclass on November 8, 2019 in Bone Hall in the Mary Duke Biddle Music Building. Three Duke student cellists participated: Holly Kim, Justin Koga, and Caroline Wang.
Joel Krosnick has performed the great quartet literature throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia, and recorded it for the Sony Classical, Wergo, and CRI labels. He has also performed as a soloist and recitalist around the world. Masterclass with pianist Andrew Tyson
This masterclass took place on October 12, 2019 in Baldwin Auditorium. Tyson heard the Sanren Trio (Sanna Symer, violin; Wallace Peaslee, cello; Courtney Dantzler, piano) perform the first movement of Anton Arensky's Piano Trio No. 1 in D Minor, Op. 32. Piano students Alina Xiao and Ian Levitan also performed works by Rachmaninoff and Greig. This masterclass was presented in association with Duke Performances.
Durham, NC native Andrew Tyson has garnered international praise as "a real poet of the piano" (BBC Radio 3). His remarkable artistic accomplishments include being a laureate of the Leeds International Piano Competition and achieving First Prize at the Géza Anda Competition in Zurich. He has performed with orchestras from the North Carolina Symphony and the Orchestra of St. Luke's at Alice Tully Hall, to the SWR Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, Musikkollegium Winterthur and the National Orchestra of Belgium under Marin Alsop.
