Duke Arts Opportunities

Duke Arts Fellows

Duke Arts Fellows seeks to promote arts education in schools with less robust arts programs. Fellows are paired one-to-one with Duke faculty mentors and matched with a Durham Public School (DPS) arts classroom. Paired fellows, mentors, and DPS educators will have expertise in the same artistic discipline.

Fellows are students of any major with a demonstrated passion for the arts who work to support the Durham community. They leverage their artistic expertise to produce fulfilling arts education programming and a capstone experience, like a production, performance, or gallery, for DPS students. Through immersion in the classroom, meetings with the faculty mentor, and production of the capstone, fellows are anticipated to dedicate approximately 20 hours per month and receive a monthly $350 non-comp payment.

Questions should be directed to Duke Arts Student Engagement Manager Anna Wallace (anna.wallace@duke.edu), who is supported by undergraduates Jeffrey Broms, Riley Campbell, and Thais Marsalis in the planning and launch of the program.

Duke Arts Studio

Duke Arts Studio offers creative, professional mentorship for undergraduate student projects in the fields of arts, entertainment, and media. Duke students from any department, any major, with a creative project in the early or mid-stages can apply to be paired with a creative industry alum or Durham-based professional in an arts/media field.

This program supports students at the early or beginning stages of a project who can articulate a clear set of goals and timeline for the work’s development. The mentees will form a cohort that meets for monthly meals and professional practices seminars. Each mentee/mentor pair will create their own sets of goals and meeting schedules. (Typical time commitment is 10 hours/month, including cohort meetings.) At the end of the spring semester, the cohort will make a public presentation of their projects’ progress.

Questions should be directed to Duke Arts Student Engagement Manager Anna Wallace (anna.wallace@duke.edu).
