Celebrate the joy, energy, and community spirit of big-band jazz at the 23rd Annual Valentine's Jazz Festival, a beloved tradition that unites three of the Triangle's most vibrant jazz programs. This year's festival brings together the powerhouse ensembles of Duke University, North Carolina Central University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for an afternoon filled with swing, soul, and electrifying ensemble playing.
Each band brings its own history, personality, and stylistic flair to the stage-from NCCU's nationally renowned jazz program, known for its rich legacy of professional-caliber musicianship, to UNC-Chapel Hill's dynamic student ensembles, and, of course, Duke's own Jazz Ensemble, celebrated for its versatility, rhythmic drive, and creative artistry.
The result is a thrilling musical exchange that highlights the incredible depth of jazz talent across our region. Expect everything from high-energy swing charts and soulful ballads to contemporary works that showcase the evolving language of jazz today. With more than 60 student musicians performing across the three groups, the festival offers a rare chance to experience big-band jazz on a grand scale.
More than just a concert, the Valentine's Jazz Festival is a celebration of collaboration and community-a place where students from across campuses come together to share their passion, creativity, and musical voice. Whether you're a longtime jazz lover or new to the genre, this annual tradition promises an afternoon of joyful energy and unforgettable performances.
