Discover the boldest new voices in contemporary chamber music as Duke's resident Ciompi Quartet presents its annual Portfolio Project Concert, a vibrant showcase of freshly composed works by current graduate students in Duke's Composition Program.
Formed in 1965, the Ciompi Quartet is celebrated for its artistic versatility and its commitment to cultivating new music. The ensemble's warm, resonant sound and curiosity-driven programming have earned them a reputation as one of the Southeast's most innovative string quartets. With this project, now entering its fifth year, Ciompi deepens its role as both artistic mentors and collaborators-championing emerging composers at a transformative stage in their careers.
This year's concert features brand-new short movements, each written specifically for Ciompi by Duke graduate composers. The result is a thrilling survey of today's creative landscape: adventurous textures, fresh harmonic languages, and unexpected expressive worlds-all shaped through close dialogue between composers and performers.
Born in the summer of 2020 during the isolation of the pandemic, the Portfolio Project was conceived as a way to keep artistic collaboration alive when live performance was nearly impossible. What began as a creative solution has since evolved into a cornerstone of the Department of Music-an annual celebration of innovation, experimentation, and the next generation of artistic leadership.
Following the performance, join Ciompi and the featured composers for a reception, where you'll have the chance to discuss the music, exchange ideas, and hear firsthand about the creative processes behind these brand-new works.
