Cuarteto Casals: Chamber Music Masterclass

Friday, February 13, -
Witness one of the world's most acclaimed string quartets up close as the internationally celebrated Cuarteto Casals leads an immersive chamber music masterclass at Duke. Founded in Barcelona in 1997 and praised for their "astonishing unanimity, tonal refinement, and interpretive insight," Cuarteto Casals has performed on the world's premier stages-including Carnegie Hall, the Philharmonie Cologne, Wigmore Hall, and the Concertgebouw-and has become known for shaping performances of extraordinary clarity and expressive depth.

In this masterclass, audiences will see the ensemble's artistic process as they coach Duke student chamber groups on techniques central to great quartet playing: shaping phrasework, refining articulation, achieving unified sound, and building intuitive musical dialogue. Cuarteto Casals is admired not only for their award-winning recordings and touring career but also for their commitment to mentorship, bringing the same musical rigor and curiosity they bring to the concert stage into the teaching studio.

This event offers a rare opportunity to observe four master musicians work collaboratively with young performers, revealing the inner mechanisms of chamber music at its highest level. Whether you're a seasoned chamber music aficionado or simply curious about how great ensembles bring music to life, this session promises insight, inspiration, and artistry of the highest caliber.

Free and open to the public. All are welcome.
