Francesca Zambello: Opera Masterclass

Monday, January 26, -
Co-sponsored by North Carolina Opera and the Schiff Family Dean of the Humanities and the Arts.

Step inside the world of professional opera as Duke welcomes internationally renowned director Francesca Zambello for an immersive masterclass with members of the Duke Opera Theater. Zambello-celebrated for her bold theatrical vision and groundbreaking productions-has shaped the stages of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, the Bolshoi Theatre, Covent Garden, Munich Staatsoper, Paris Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the English National Opera.

Known for her vivid storytelling and ability to draw deeply human performances from singers, Zambello brings decades of experience to this rare educational event. Students will perform arias and scenes while receiving detailed coaching on vocal interpretation, dramatic intention, movement, and stagecraft. Audience members gain a behind-the-scenes look at how a world-class director transforms music and text into compelling theatrical moments.

Zambello's presence on campus is a remarkable opportunity-not only for the participating singers, but for anyone interested in the artistry, discipline, and imagination that define contemporary opera. Witnessing her process up close offers a glimpse into the creative alchemy that takes place long before opening night.

Free and open to the public. All are welcome.
