Karen Messina's Ph.D. dissertation, “Dramatic Impulse: Diegetic Music in the Operas of Giacomo Puccini,” includes chapter-length studies of the operas Manon Lescaut, La bohème, and Tosca, framed by an original account of concepts of diegetic music in film and opera.
