Duke Music
We are pleased to announce that Jimmy Gilmore and Elizabeth Beilman have been awarded the Raleigh Medal of Arts for Creative Leadership for 2024. This honor, the highest given by the city of Raleigh, recognizes their significant contributions to the arts.
Jimmy Gilmore, a Clarinet Professor at Duke University and retired Principal Clarinet of the North Carolina Symphony, and Elizabeth Beilman, a cellist and long-time member of the North Carolina Symphony, co-founded the North Carolina Chamber Music Institute (NCCMI) in 2014. This organization provides a comprehensive and unique training program for young musicians, including financial aid to ensure access for all talented students.
Each year, NCCMI ensembles perform over 50 events across the Triangle area, including parks, libraries, and retirement communities. Their educational partners, such as the North Carolina Symphony and Chamber Music Raleigh, provide world-class artists for master classes and performance opportunities. NCCMI students have achieved success in major competitions like the Fischoff and St. Paul String Quartet Competitions, demonstrating the program’s significant impact on the lives of young artists.
Additionally, Jimmy and Elizabeth founded Aurora Musicalis, a chamber music ensemble comprised of North Carolina Symphony musicians. This group premiered and recorded Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Robert Ward's Echoes of America, a piece written specifically for them, under the Albany Records label.
Together, Jimmy and Elizabeth have a combined track record of many decades in teaching. Many of their students have gone on to successful careers in the music profession, furthering their legacy of excellence.
Join us in congratulating Jimmy Gilmore and Elizabeth Beilman on this well-deserved recognition. Their achievements enhance the artistic spirit of our community and provide invaluable opportunities for the next generation of musicians.
