Paul R. Bryan
The latest CD of the symphonies of Johann Baptists Vaňhal (1739-1813), performed by the Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra and released by Naxos in February 2022, is dedicated to the memory of Duke University Professor Emeritus Paul Bryan, who died in 2021 at age 101.
Professor Bryan was a musicologist who specialized in the music of the eighteenth century, and in particular was a champion and cataloger of Vaňhal's music. A noted authority about the life and work of the Czech composer, Professor Bryan continued to write and speak about him throughout his retirement. In 2013 at the age of 93, Professor Bryan was interviewed on Czech National Radio as part of a remembrance of the 200th anniversary of Vaňhal's death.
